BRIEF HISTORY OF SECOND INFANTRY BATTALION
The Second Infantry Battalion is co-located with the First Infantry Battalion at the Edward Beyan Kesselly Military Barracks in Schiefflin Township, lower Margibi county, Liberia. The Battalion is one of the two infantry units within the 23rd infantry Brigade.
Second Infantry Battalion was activated on 19 Dec 08 at the Barclay Training center in Monrovia. The Second Infantry Battalion of 657 soldiers comprises of five units including Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and HHC as well as the Combat Support Company. Brig. Gen Frederick Martin, Deputy Director for Operations and Logistics at the US Africa Command was the Keynote Speaker during the activation parade and Maj Gen Suraj AO Abdurrahman was the Command Officer-In -Charge of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) during the activation of the Battalion. The Battalion Sergeant Major was Freeman, Karmoh and the Battalion commander was Lt Col Emmanuel Larbi Sarpong Gyadu of Ghana Army.
INTERNAL SECURITY OPERATIONS
The Second Infantry Battalion’s Alpha Company was the first combat unit of the AFL that was launched into operation code named (Operation Restore Hope) in June 2012. The operation was conducted at Liberia’s eastern frontiers with Ivory coast in Grand Gedeh, River Gee and Maryland counties under a Joint Task Force (JTF) with other security agencies to include the Liberia National Police (LNP), the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) and the Drug Enforcement agency (DEA). The AFL first component commander under the JTF was Maj Powo, Stephen T. The JTF commander was Lt Col Gboe, Cephas.
